Kenshi Yonezu has pretty much become the go-to for theme songs linked to anime shit. So far he’s released a song for My Hero Academia, two songs for Chainsaw Man, a song for the live-action Ultraman film and a song for The Boy and the Heron. And now here is with a song for the live-action adaptation of the acclaimed animated film 5 Centimeters per Second, titled “1991”.

One thing about Kenshi — he’s gonna give you a really good music video. So, unsurprisingly, the music video for “1991” is really good. Simple, but effective, with motifs which tie into 5 Centimeters per Second. And I’m generally a sucker for any video that plays around with aspect ratios.

Kenshi Yonezu has really started to come into himself over the years. He seems far less elusive. He is finally showing us both of his eyes, showing more of his face and is making himself more of a focus in his music videos, which show different facets of his personality. It’s really cool to see. Especially because he didn’t really need to do any of it. Kenshi had a decent level of success when he was just putting out songs and nobody really knew what he looked like or who he was. And given that he is part of the generation of music acts in Japan who cultivated huge followings online before signing to major record labels — he coulda just stayed elusive.

But what makes Kenshi putting himself out there so remarkable, is that he is autistic. Kenshi was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at the age of 20. So for him to be showing more of himself, collaborating more with other people, putting interviews up on his YouTube channel and continuing to do live shows — it’s really inspiring. Especially to an introvert like myself who has often wondered if they have the Street Fighter Alpha 3 A-ISM.
