A mere 2 days before Caroline Polachek's drops her debut album Pang, and as has become the norm in the streaming age of music, Caroline has let another song out into the world.
"Look at me now" is another song that Caroline had done with PC music's Danny L. Harle. A song that she wrote last year during a point in her life she described as 'Neck deep in waves of guilt, self-destructiveness, and sudden clarity'. Gurl. Been there.
The title of the song is interesting, because it leads you in with an expectation of the context in which it's used. Look at me now in the song is preceded by the word don't. And with this, you can take the song in two ways. It's either having a conversation with your past self at a point in your life when you still don't have it quite together and you don't want them to see that you've not grown to be the person that you hoped you would become. Or it's about your past self actually refusing to look at the person that you've become, because they're disappointed that you didn't want become the person they wanted you to become. Both takes are relatable. And just the declaration of Look at me now could be seen as the thing that you ultimately want yourself to be able to do.
This song was like a drop kick to the chest.
First JoJo reads her whole damn self in a song, now Caroline is out here doing it too. I'm not precious over the need for every song to be deep and I don't shit on songs which aren't. Good music, is good music. But it is nice to have a song come along which features a subject matter that is so real and about the relationship that we have with ourselves. Because I'm sure many of us have experienced that sense of feeling that you've not lived up to your potential and letting down your younger self.
Caroline's debut album Pang releases on October 17th, this Friday. I was already stocked to hear this album, but after this, I'll be waiting at midnight for the drop. All of the songs Caroline has released so far have signalled that this is gonna be an album and that it could be one of the albums of 2019.
