Album Cut: Victoria Beckham - Like That | Wannabe R&B Spice

A cassette tape of Victoria Beckham’s self-titled debut studio album lying on a surface, with the words ‘ALBUM CUTS’ superimposed onto the image on the top right-hand side.

Turns out yesterday was Posh Spice's birthday. Upon knowing that I was going to do a Flashback Friday on the mess that was her debut single "Not Such An Innocent Girl", but knew I'd just be talking about a song that she should have released instead of it. So, I figured I may as well dedicate a post to that song.

Many probably have no idea that R&B vocalist Victoria Beckham had actually released a solo album back in 2001. And many would probably be surprised to hear that it had Victoria dipping her toe into R&B. Of course the album flopped and Victoria Beckham backed away from music like Homer into bushes. The UK clearly wasn't ready to have its own Jennifer Lopez. But the album had a couple of good songs. One of which was "Like That", which struck a far better balance between R&B and Pop than her debut single "Not Such An Innocent Girl" did.

It honestly wouldn't have mattered which song Victoria put out from her album. Nothing on it would have contended with Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", which beat Victoria to number 1 in the UK.

I'd probably like this song more if it had somebody else singing it (Crystal Kay came to mind for some reason), but it's still a good song and Victoria sounds good and natural on it. Her vocals are also dominant on the song, unlike the full blown R&B cuts on her album such as "Girlfriend" and "I Wish", which despite being absolute bops, would definitely have been far better suited for somebody else. And in true J.Lo fashion, the majority of vocals on the songs aren't even hers and the songs sound good because they aren't.
