Ken Hirai has graced fans with a music video to "Kaibutsu-san" ("Monster"). His first single of 2020, following his last single release "#302" in December.
"Kaibutsu-san" is an interesting song, because Ken Hirai wrote it with fellow artist Aimyon in mind; for both the song and the video, which explains why her presence on the song is so dominant and it sounds like an Aimyon song featuring Ken Hirai.
This is a great song with an amazing video, which has the potential to crossover and gain some love in the West at this very moment in time, with Dua Lipa's colourful music videos and Disco inspired sound currently being lauded over. But I almost wish that Ken had just given the whole entire thing to Aimyon. Her voice sits nicely on the music, where-as Ken's grates, except for the moments when his vocals are layered with Aimyon's. Ken's voice blends nicely with female vocals, but on its own...it's definitely an acquired taste and it doesn't suit every song.
Aimyon did her thing. But Kavka Shisheido would have looked amazing in this video and sounded great on this song.
And for those who were as mesmerised by the music video as I was, it was directed by Yusuke Tanaka, who has directed several of Perfume's videos ("Spring Of Life", "Spending All My Time", "Sweet Refrain", "Flash", "Mugen mirai" and "Everyday") and one of Namie Amuro's best, "Rocksteady".
