Perfume still want coin from their 2019 Reframe performance, so they're releasing it into cinemas for a limited 2 week run from September 4th, 2020.
This is cute. But, September is only a month away, and we're in a pandemic. Miss Corona ain't packing up her bags and leaving any time soon. So for Perfume to release anything into cinemas and for only a two week run is in poor choice. Even big ass studios are pulling their films from release schedules.
This would have been the perfect time for Perfume's team to have released Reframe on Netflix. Netflix is amassing a decent amount of Japanese content, and Perfume following suit after Hikaru Utada released her Laughter in the Dark tour via the service would have been a great look, and possibly pushed other J-artists to consider doing the same.
Not only would a Netflix release have not required people to attend a public movie theatre, but it would have had a greater reach, and been a cool gift to their global fans. I don't get why Perfume and their team go to such lengths to deliver such amazing feats for shows, just to completely restrict people from experiencing them. Just make the damn thing available for everybody. The girls could have done a watch party and all sorts of fun things. But nope. A cinema release for two weeks. This is a dusty idea anyway, but it's even dustier given current events.
This continues to show that Perfume's team still aren't on their shit and that there's no real focus in terms of what they want to achieve for the girls within Japan, let alone outside of it.
If you've not watched Reframe, be sure to. It's really good. However, if you're in Japan, just don't risk your life going to a cinema to watch it. I'm sure there are Megaupload links of it knocking around.
