Blackpink have finally released their song "Ice Cream", a collaboration with Selena Gomez and their first song as part of a push for Blackpink's US debut. Blinks will love it. Whatever Selena Gomez's fanbase call themselves will live for it. But this song is doo-doo flavoured ice cream.
Selena Gomez gets dragged every day of the week for not being able to sing, dance and being nothing special. She's not the most obvious feature on a Blackpink song and she's not the most stylistic choice. But she's mad popular and chart gold, and with YG wanting traction in the US and a high entry on the Billboard, Selena Gomez's inclusion is purely strategic. Ariana Grande (who is listed as a co-writer on the song) would have been a much better fit if YG wanted to tick both boxes of a mega popular artist and a good fit for the girls, but I guess a bitch was busy.
The song itself is boring as all hell. It doesn't go anywhere. Selena doesn't add anything (but we knew that she wouldn't). And where is the damn hook on this thing!? Eight songwriters and four producers, and THIS *gestures* is the best they could come up with between them!? MNEK would never.
As for the music video, it was cute, coloruful and featured alotta pink, as Blackpink videos do. It's what you would expect from Blackpink for a song called "Ice Cream". But with all the technology, where visual effects are in 2020 and the wealth of VFX artists out there who are chomping at the bit for some work, you mean to tell me they couldn't composite at least ONE shot of Blackpink and Selena Gomez together!?
"Ice Cream" will feature on Blackpink's upcoming debut Korean studio album, simply titled The Album, alongside "How Do You Like That?". It's crazy that these girls have yet to release a full length album in Korea. But that's YG for you. Never forget how he had a good thing with 2NE1 and fucked it all up.
