Netflix release a ‘teaser’ for First Love, which basically shows the whole story

Following the news of the double vinyl release of First Love / Hatsukoi, Netflix have released a PROPER proper trailer for their upcoming series inspired by both of these albums. Although they are still calling it a ‘teaser’.

Okay then.

The first trailer was more of a extended teaser. Where as this ‘teaser’ lays out more of the story, and we get a greater context of the role Hikaru Utada’s songs will play. And it turns out that “First Love” and “Hatsukoi” are not the only songs featured in this show. Because we get some “Automatic” too. I mean...of course we’d get “Automatic”. How could you do a story about the impact of Hikaru Utada’s First Love, both song and album, but not touch on “Automatic”? ‘You cannot’ is the answer. They’re a package deal. “First Love” is for the sweets, but “Automatic” is for the streets.

Teruzane is good. He don’t miss an opportunity to squeeze some extra sales out of his daughter’s albums.

This ‘teaser’ showed pretty much the whole damn story. But because we were getting time jumps and re-casts as a result of the time jumps all supercut together, with no clear indicator of who’s who, it was difficult for me to keep track of the characters. I’m sure when watching the show it will be easier to follow. But I couldn’t even even enjoy the trailer teaser because I could peel my thoughts away from ‘Okay, but who is who!?’. Maybe this is something which will be clearer to Japanese speakers, as characters names were more than likely said.

I’m curious to see if this show will be able to pull time-jumps and re-casts off, especially in the wake of House of the Dragon, which famously and controversially did the same thing, resulting in viewers becoming attached to characters, just for them to be recast mid season via a significant time jump. Yet controversially, most of the recasts during time jumps occur with the women and not some of the men. Tell me how Doctor Who and Ser Pussy-Whipped had not aged ONCE? Yet we watched Viserys go from spritely to a skeleton? Yes, I know Viserys had some disease, but that man was still aging.

I am genuinely wondering if we will get a Hikaru Utada cameo in this show. Because the closer we get to First Love’s release date and the more we see of it, the more Hikaru Utada we seem to get in some form. I figured this Netflix show would just use the name ‘First Love’ and MAYBE include the song. I didn’t think we’d get other songs, end up with special album re-releases, and see Hikaru Utada CD’s and billboards so prominently.

We’re in the age of cameos, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Hikaru did pop up in First Love for a brief moment.
