Watch the Mario Kart Band jam out and perform a couple of songs from Mario Kart World

So, Nintendo decided to remind people that they actually do remember Mario Kart World. But instead of releasing new DLC for the game (although Nintendo has released some since), they shared a couple of videos from the recording sessions of the soundtrack — which included the main theme and the absolute bop that is “Crown City”.

Mario Kart World is a decent game, but it’s pretty undercooked. The game looks gorgeous. There are some really cool ideas and some amazing courses. But there are one too many ideas and features which are not fleshed out enough. And as a result, Mario Kart World just doesn’t feel as tight or as complete of a package as Mario Kart 8 did. But that’s MY opinion. And whilst opinions on Mario Kart World’s gameplay are extremely mixed — one thing everyone agrees on, is that it has an incredible soundtrack, which is somehow better than Mario Kart 8’s. And this is a feat, considering how amazing the soundtrack for Mario Kart 8 was and still is. From the day of release, everybody was talking up the Mario Kart World soundtrack and wondering where the hell it was on Nintendo Music — only in June did Nintendo release the soundtrack on there, which is typical Nintendo. But recently they uploaded videos featuring recording sessions for some of the music.

One of the coolest things about this video is not just the range of musicians, but the range of people. You’ve got all genders, ages, styles. And because there doesn’t appear to have been a dress code given to anybody, you get a sense of everybody’s personality in how they appear. Some people here look like full time musicians. Some look like they play music on the side. Others look like they play in a band. A couple of the younger guys look like they could still be studying music. One of the women looks like she holds down a family, but stays ready with her violin. One of the guys looks like a lifelong musician who probably played on a bunch of city pop records back in the day. Some of the people look like they could be Nintendo employees who happen to play music. A couple of the older guys look like they could be retired, but still play for the love of the [turns and looks into the camera] game. There is a mix of people from different walks of life. But the one thing they all have in common is that they’re great musicians with a love for music. I found everybody so inspiring and really wanted to know more about some of these people. And another cool thing about the decision for the Mario Kart 8 soundtrack to be played by musicians, is that all of these people got paid. It’s a shame that none of the musicians are credited in the video or in the credits of the game though. They really should be.

Mr. Melodica was playing for his LIFE. I remember the first time I played Mario Kart World and heard “Crown City”. I was sitting there shaking my imaginary titties for the entire race. Everything about it is spectacular. Run “Crown City” a Grammy award.
