Dis Cover: Sugababes - Sugababes

A screenshot of Photoshop displaying multiple windows. The main window features the cover art for the Sugababes self-titled ninth studio. The other window features a promo shot for said album.

The first thing that came to mind when I first saw this cover was Perfume’s “Spending All My Time”. If you know, you know.

The album cover for the Sugababes’ ninth studio album. Featuring the Sugababes [from left to right: Keisha, Siobhán and Mutya] sat at a table in a room with a wood panelled wall and green carpet.

I really like this. I think the ladies all look great. I like the logo placement. I like that the tracklisting is also on the front. I like it. Although the cover doesn’t look quite so hot for the cassette version of the album, because they left so much damn empty space on it. I do not understand why it doesn’t include the group name / album title. Or why something wasn’t shot specifically for the cassette cover. The website does state that the ‘product may differ to image displayed’. And for the sake of those who have pre-ordered the cassette, I bloody hope that it does.

Something about the Sugababes that I think is SO overlooked is how good the typography choices and graphic / visual design is for their albums. One Touch, Angels with Dirty Faces, Three and Change all had such cool Sugababes logos, font choices, single arts, album covers and inlay booklet designs. And even with this album, the singles all had really cool covers. I was a bit surprised they didn’t keep the look and aesthetic of the single covers. But what they went with still works and looks cool.

And an amazing tidbit about this album cover is that it was shot by Liz Collins, who also shot the album cover for the Subabages debut album One Touch. For Liz and the Sugababes to work together on an album cover shoot 25 years after working together for the first time for the Sugababes’ first ever album with the same line-up and to use the same logo front for the group name is such a crazy full circle moment.

I don’t have much more to say than this really. Sugababes has a really nice album cover which will look great on a vinyl sleeve. I’m not sure whether the rise in popularity of vinyl has impacted creative choices and photography when it comes to album covers. But I feel like it has.
