The Sugababes release their duppy anthem “Ghost” in time for Halloween

The Sugababes have released a new song, which came not long after a long-awaited album announcement.

A lot of fans seem really lukewarm on this song, which is a shame, because I really like it. It’s not blowing me away. But I do think it’s a really good song. It’s the first song the Sugababes have released in a while which feels like an old school Sugababes song. It’s very much in the vein of what Sugababes 2.0 put out, which I like. It feels like stepping into an alternate reality where Siobhán never went to the loo and climbed out of the window to leave the group, and Angels with Dirty Faces, Three and Taller in More Ways included her.

I also think “Ghost” is one of the Sugababes’ best music videos, which also feels very them. “Ghost” feels like it exists in the same world as the videos for “Run for Cover” and “Freak Like Me”.

I always like when a music video manages to do a lot with very little. There are only a couple of setups in this video and not much is happening. But the styling, the editing, the dancers and the cinematography keep it interesting. My only note for the video is that I wish the font at the start was the same as the sugababes logo. But that’s a minor thing.

Sugababes - Ghost | Sugababes

In an ideal world “Ghost” would catch on and become a bit of a Halloween song in the UK, but I can’t see it happening with the way the Sugababes (and just the music business in general) tends to move on from singles so quickly. But in an ideal world, the Sugababes would also release a Ghost EP in October, with a Spookier Mix of “Ghost”, a Wild Mix of “Jungle” and re-recorded versions of “Run for Cover”, “Freak Like Me” and “Bruised”.
