September 19th, marked the 30th anniversary of Janet Jackson's Rhythm nation 1814. An album that only changed the course of Janet Jackson's career, but impacted the landscape of Pop years after its release and sported a social conscious narrative which is as fitting now as it was in 1989. So it's incredibly fitting that for its anniversary, Janet would release a slew of remixes to streaming platforms, to remind everybody that Rhythm nation 1814 is still that album and as relevant now as it ever was.
Rhythm nation 1814 spawned a ridiculous and now unprecedented 7 singles, 4 of which hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and 3 of which charted within the top 5. And now we can stream the remix releases of every single on of them. Many of these remixes were once considered rare. And in the midst of them, we also get two B-sides "You need me" and "The skin game", neither of which made the final cut for Rhythm nation. AND if that wasn't enough, we get acapella's of "Miss you much" and "Love would never do (Without you)" and instrumentals for "Rhythm nation", "Miss you much" and "Come back to me".
Digging into these remixes makes me feel like I'm rediscovering Rhythm nation all over again.
The nerve of dis amazing bitch.
Rhythm nation 1814 is an iconic album from an iconic Pop star and is a Janet album that I go back to regularly alongside The velvet rope. I may review it one day. But y'all long term Random J Pop readers know me and reviews. *Wheeze laughs loudly*
