Chloe of Chloe x Halle is 'bout to drop some solo shit

Chloe of Chloe x Halle is 'bout to drop some solo shit | Random J Pop

So Chloe, of Chloe x Halle and Grown-ish fame is getting her foot in the solo game EARLY. After only 2 albums as part of a duo. It's crazy to think Chloe x Halle have only released 2 studio albums. It feels like they've been around for the longest time and should be at least 4 albums deep.

HENNYWAY.

Back in July when Chloe teased a clip of a song on her Instagram titled "Have Mercy", there wasn't much info that came along with it. And because Chloe had been giving us impromptu professional photoshoots, performances and covers of songs since having her own Instagram page, it was easy to just chalk the teaser up to Chloe producing 'content' and doing shit for fun. But, nope. That teaser is for a song which is 100% going to be a single, and Chloe will be performing it at the 2021 MTV VMA's on September 12th.

In case you missed it, here's the song and video clip that Chloe teased back in July.

Chloe did an interview with Billboard where she confirmed some shit. The biggest shit being that "Have Mercy" is not just some one-off single. It will be followed by an album and it will drop sooner than fans think. Chloe also touched on the direction of the album, stating that it will be more pop leaning that what Chloe x Halle fans are used to. Although I think Ungodly Hour did such a great job of transitioning Chloe and Halle into a more pop filled space, that I don't think Chloe's album capitalising on this and going further with it will be a surprise to anybody. As for who Chloe was worked with on this album, we only have two names thus far. Murdabeatz is the producer of Chloe's debut single "Have Mercy". And Chloe revealed on Twitter that she has been in the studio with The Neptunes. If The Neptunes' sound wasn't such an inconsistent mess I'd be excited about this. Hopefully they're on some Sweetener ("Borderline", "Get Well Soon") or Snoh Aalegra "In Your Eyes" tip. I don't want no Man of the Woods bullshit.

I'm genuinely hyped to see Chloe go solo. There was a clear switch in Chloe with the "Do It" music video, which carried through to every performance she did as part of the Ungodly Hour promo. There was a sense that she was ready to bust loose, which made me say very early on 'I really want to see Chloe do some solo shit'. I always knew the day would come, but didn't think for a second it'd happen this soon. The timing is pretty perfect though, for both Chloe and Halle, as it gives them both a chance to indulge in their solo projects either simultaneously or back to back. Chances are we'll see Chloe's album either at the end of this year or the top of 2022. That we'll get a Christmas Disney sing-a-long episode which will feature Chloe x Halle's third appearance covering a Disney classic. Then at some point in 2022 we'll get a trailer and a release date for The Little Mermaid, and then Halle will get her moment. And I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Chloe x Halle song on The Little Mermaid soundtrack too.

Chloe x Halle also plan on touring Ungodly Hour at some point, but lawd knows when they'll fit that in between Chloe's solo album and The Little Mermaid. Ungodly Hour will also be mad old by the time they're able to tour it. And chances are they'll be working on an Ungodly Hour follow up long before it hits the road. Given the pandemic, which had already impacted the release for The Little Mermaid and has continually been pushing back and cancelling tours; I say Chloe x Halle wait until they have another album out, and then do what Ariana did with her Sweetener tour and Beyoncé did with her Formation world tour, and combine 2 albums into one tour. And by this point they'll have 2 albums worth of material, Chloe's solo album and Halle's songs from The Little Mermaid to make a setlist from.

Chloe of Chloe x Halle - Ungodly Hour | Random J Pop

It is a shame that Ungodly Hour didn't get as big a moment it deserved. Chloe x Halle gave us some great performances, finessed promo throughout 2020 and Ungodly Hour was a great rebrand and reintroduction of Chloe x Halle. But the one thing their team dropped the ball on was the single rollouts. They stayed on "Do It" far too long, and "Forgive Me" wasn't the right single to follow it up with. "Ungodly Hour" should've swiftly been made a promotional single, but they took almost an entire year to release a music video, which ended up being nowhere near as good as their 2020 VMA performance, which was pretty much a music video. "Busy Boy" also shoulda been a single in the Summer. And then "Don't Make It Harder On Me" should have been serviced as a single for Christmas to capitalise on the Motown Christmas vibes. But Ungodly Hour was still a success. It broadened Chloe x Halle's fanbase in a big way and set a stage for Chloe to give us what she's 'bout to give us, and I can't wait, because if there's one thing Chloe gon' do, it's perform. And I don't hear enough people talking about how she can SANG.
