When BoA released the music video for “Better” back in 2020, a question asked by fans was ‘Where is the dance practise video?’. And I think fans were being VERY vocal about it, because BoA did address it via an Instagram post, where she posted a short snippet of a dance practise; stating that her having a cold that day and not really liking how she performed as the reason why the full video hadn’t been released. But SM Entertainment said ‘Fuck it’ (over a year later) and released the whole video. And we can tell that this is indeed a dance practise video from back in 2020, because BoA has her “Better” bundles in.
SM Entertainment launched their SMP Floor YouTube channel back in February, which is where all dance practices, rehearsals and dance versions of music videos and performances will be uploaded. So of course, there had to be a BoA video on this channel. It makes zero sense for SM to release a dance focused YouTube channel and for their to not be a single BoA practise video on it. And the timing of SM making this video of BoA available now is obviously planned, given the recent release of the Chinese version of “Better” featuring Xin.
It’s cool to see “Better” have another lil’ moment. It’s a great song which unfortunately had its initial moment cut short, between younger K-pop fans having no taste, K-pop being ageist, and then that whole non-scandal about BoA’s sleeping tablets; which resulted in SM cancelling ALL of BoA’s promo and taking her out of one of the online SM Town Live Culture Humanity show.
K-pop has a massive issue when it comes to how they deal with scandals, especially when women are at the heart of them. The entertainment companies these women are signed to do not provide the level of support that they should. You would think SM Entertainment would be better at navigating this, given the unfortunate scandals they’ve had to deal with in the past. But nope. All they care about is the optics for their business. Fuck not standing with their talent when they have done nothing wrong, and a moral obligation to the people who make them their money. But that’s a whole other conversation for another day.
In a lot of BoA’s behind-the-scenes videos these days, she often voices concern about being an older dancer amongst younger talent who can move in ways she no longer can. But when watch her dance, and it’s like ‘Bitch, where!?’. BoA is still the one hitting the steps with ease and precision, and giving the other dancers a run for their money. And she’s having to do most of the work. Because there are dancers constantly dropping in and out of the routine, the whole time BoA’s still there dancing through the whole thing.
And watching the dance practise video for “Better”, I realise how little of the detail of the routine we actually saw in the music video, and even during performances, because of how K-pop cameramen be trash.
