A while back, Crystal Kay uploaded a YouTube video of herself covering BTS’ hit song “Dynamite”. No production. No studio recording. Just Crystal sat in a room, with her phone in hand. No musical backup. Just the echoes of the four walls.
Crystal Kay is an artist with resources, signed to a major record label and a big ass management company. So tell me why is she sitting in some room with a microphone singing songs off of her phone in a YouTube video? Why is Crystal not covering songs in a proper setup with a musician? At the very LEAST, she coulda had her MacBook playing an instrumental of the song. BTS even released the official instrumental of “Dynamite”. It’s RIGHT there on streaming.
Crystal sounded good, even with this raggedy setup. I mean...it would take one hell of an awful setup for Crystal to not sound good. But cover videos such as this give the impression that Crystal Kay is some girl just starting out and trying to make it with YouTube covers. And to be quite honest, it’s not even giving the level of care and production that I’ve seen these YouTube cover folks give, even when they had nothing but a webcam to shoot their shit.
Girl. Fire the whole management and marketing team.
Crystal’s cover of BTS’ “Dynamite” was a little raggedy, as she didn’t know the lyrics and was fucking up the song at parts. But still, I went ahead and slapped it over the official instrumental. And well, this is the end result. It’s not perfect. Crystal wasn’t singing directly into the mic for one. And because she didn’t know all of the lyrics, she mumbles parts. But I did what I could. I certainly put more effort into making this sound legit than Crystal did.
It really is wild to me that Crystal would choose to cover a popular song, by such a popular group, and not think to maybe do it properly in the hopes of having it go viral and have people actually discover her. But nothing about her YouTube channel seems to be geared towards trying to get a high volume of views. The channel name is a mess. The video titles are all in Japanese. No subtitles on that shit. Nothing that touches on her legacy of music at all.
