Singer, songwriter, big cat queen (Carole Baskin, who!?) Victoria Monét decided to mark the first birthday of her first daughter Hazel, by dedicating a new song and music video to her. Victoria has been showing off her baby in every other Instagram post since having her. So it was only a matter of time until she got a song and music video in her honour.

“Nothing Feels Better” is a nice hearkening back to the days of Motown. Bump up the tempo, throw some drums, guitars and percussion on this shit, and it could easily be a Jackson 5 song.

“Nothing Feels Better” would have made a great Christmas release, between the song having underlying festive vibes, the actual glimpses of Christmas, and the familial theme of the music video.

Every song that Victoria has released post Jaguar has shared the same grounded and soulful vibe, which I’m all for, because I adored the sound of Jaguar. Victoria had said that Jaguar was part of a bigger project. And whether this is still the case or not, Victoria is carrying the sound of Jaguar through to whatever comes next regardless.

I do hope that Jaguar gets another half, or that Victoria pulls the same stunt that Jazmine Sullivan did with Heaux Tales, and gives us a deluxe edition with additional songs to make it a full album. Jaguar never got the moment or the recognition that it deserved, and it’s never too late to do something in order to claim it. I hope Victoria hasn’t let the dismal commercial performance of Jaguar make her think that there wasn’t a lot of support and love for it, because there most certainly was. Music moves on too quickly these days. I don’t think any record label or artist should feel a type of way about giving a release another shot - especially in this age of music where there is so much, so fast and all at once. It’s so easy to miss things. And over the course of the advent of TikTok and mobilised fanbases, we’ve seen that even flops can become hits in time with the right push. Even if it’s a decade later.

Victoria has barely said anything about what’s next in terms of new music, or if her homegirl Ariana is working on new stuff. But it’s pretty standard for her. Victoria likes to keep her cards close to her chest, and I ain’t mad at that. It’s smart. Especially with how these streets be.
