Perfume’s Nocchi is a gamer gworl and should have her own Twitch channel, but that ain’t ever gonna happen
So, each member of Perfume seems to have their own solo activities going on outside of music and performing. a-chan is a guest host on a TV show. Kashiyuka’s thing is staring at ceramic pots. And Nocchi’s thing is doing interviews with game developers. Now. I’m biased. Because Nocchi is my favoured member of Perfume, and I also happen to an occasional gamer.
Y’all.
I have not turned on my PS4 since I completed Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which was abck in 2020, and Nocchi even interviewed the producer of the Yazkua series.
But this is not the segue.
The point I’m trying to make is that this whole Nocchi and gaming thing could be a much bigger thing. Gaming continues to grow as a form of entertainment which is widely consumed. We’re getting films based on video games. TV shows based on video game series’. It’s all big. Also, Perfume’s whole thing is about existing as these avatars. And their music over the course of 2021 and 2022 specifically has entertained the idea of living in a world which isn’t real, music like video games. I mean, shit. Their first album is even called Game. So there’s a lot Perfume’s team could actually do with Nocchi being a fan of video games.
Giving Nocchi a Twitch channel would do THINGS. But Amuse ain’t ever allowing that, and neither is a-chan. Anything which means Nocchi getting extra exposure, a-chan ain’t with it. a-chan stays trying to hold Nocchi back. And I know it was the spirit of 2018 a-chan who convinced Nocchi to wear this.

I would completely get if Nocchi herself is hesitant for this gaming thing to become a bigger deal than it is. Gaming can be the ghetto when it comes to fandoms, coverage, all of it. Same as every other form of entertainment. Nocchi is a woman, and sexism and harassment in gaming is still as ripe as it is in every other form of entertainment. And sometimes you don’t want something which is your personal hobby to become a job and something everybody is fully privy to. I don’t know how streamers do that shit. So, I would completely get it if Nocchi was posed with an opportunity to grow the scope of what is just a cute little side project, and said ‘Bitch, ja nai’.
It’s also just occurred to me that Perfume have yet to do a song tie-in with a video game. They’ve served up themes for J-dramas, live-action films, and animated films, but not yet a video game. Even Nakata Yasutaka has managed to get a video game song tie-in on his resume, having produced and co-written Shōnan no Kaze’s “Ichibanka”, which was the theme song for Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Damn. That’s the second connection made to the Yakuza video game series in this post.
Amuse need to get Perfume that video game song tie-in money.
The officially titled Nocchi Wants to Play Games is a pretty cool series, with Nocchi meeting producers of popular video game series and just shooting the shit. Nocchi is not a journalist, so there are no big scoops or exclusives that come out of these discussions. But this is also what leads to cool things being disclosed about the creative process behind the varied disciplines involved in video game development, as opposed to pokes and prods for when a game is coming out and what it’s going to feature.
All of the Nocchi and video game articles are in Japanese. But for those of you speak the language or don’t feel no way about a lil’ Google Translate, all of the Nocchi Wants to Play Games features can be found below.
