Perfume want that home video streaming money. Because not only are they hitting Disney+, but will also have their shit heading to Netflix.
Perfume's My Music Story which was originally released on Disney Deluxe (Japan's equivalent of Disney+) will be heading to Disney+ in selected territories where the service is available. And Perfume's 2019 Reframe performance and their P.O.P FES gig Imaginary Museum: Time Warp will be heading to Netflix globally.
My Music Story is a documentary series on Disney Deluxe with each episode focusing on a different popular Japanese act, and Perfume were one of the first to feature.
Reframe was a special performance with a focus on technology, featuring exclusive gadgetry and setups courtesy of the Rhizomatiks that hadn't been shown nor used for any of Perfume's tours or performances prior. Performances that had specific and well known setups in the past (such as "Edge" and "Fusion") were reworked for Reframe and featured new visuals.
Imaginary Museum was an online gig that Perfume held in Summer of 2020, as a treat for fans for the last date of their P Cubed tour being cancelled due to the pandemic. Because Perfume and their team are responsible and ain't try'na encourage gatherings, unlike Kumi Koda who said 'Fuck it' and still toured. It's great to hear that Imaginary Museum will be hitting a streaming service, because I was not expecting Perfume to ever release it. So many fans had expressed their disappointment at not being able to watch it when it first aired due to being strapped for cash. So those who were in that boat, but have Netflix will be chuffed.
If you're a Perfume fan who has neither of these streaming services and hasn't yet watched any of the above, you may be wondering which service to go for. Going on math alone, Netflix will be getting two Perfume shows, where as Disney+ is getting just the one. But the one show on Disney+ does feature a couple of Disney exclusive performances and is a documentary which features interviews with Perfume and their choreographer Mikiko. There is also footage of them in rehearsals, marking sections out on set, and a look at how much input Perfume actually have when it comes to their performances - a side to them you rarely see. a-chan advises on shots, and at one point Kashiyuka is so meticulous about spacing and camera positioning, that she brings out a tape measure.
If you are a UK Perfume fan, then the decision is made for you, because My Music Story isn't available on Disney+ in the UK. But for you Perfume fans in the US, below are the setlists featured in each to help you make a decision.
Picking a streaming service is a commitment. So, think of the long-term: Which service has the shit that you know you'll watch? Netflix has RuPaul's Drag Race, a bunch of Nickelodeon shows such as Avatar and The Legend of Korra, Netflix originals such as The Queen's Gambit, lots of cult TV shows, a range of Japanese dramas and also gigs such as Beyonce's Homecoming, Ariana Grande's Sweetener tour and Hikaru Utada's Laughter in the Dark. But Disney+ has every single Disney movie, Star Wars movie, Star Wars shows such as The Mandalorian, all of the Marvel movies, and the Marvel shows such the currently popular WandaVision and the upcoming The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.
But if you're not looking to get either, but have yet to see any of the performances from the above, then I can help you out a little bit, as you can find some of them here on the ol' blog, in addition to a review of Reframe.
