Perfume pretend they give a damn about “Time Warp” for a televised performance on The Music Day

Perfume pretend they give a damn about “Time Warp” for a televised performance on The Music Day | Random J Pop

I really am surprised that Perfume performed “Time Warp”. Because they moved on from this song so fucking fast, as though they couldn’t wait to be done with it. But it’s gonna be on their upcoming album Plasma, which they’re probably pissed about. So I guess they felt they had to perform it.

Perfume love themselves a nasty stage outfit. But I truly feel the nasty stage outfits on this occasions was their own form of protest against the song, because they were extra nasty. Nocchi was the only one who looked half-decent. Obviously. Because she’s Nocchi. She makes shit work. Also, she was hitting this routine the best and really selling this performance. a-chan fully checked out. And even Kashiyuka’s new hair style wasn’t enough to detract from how awful her ensemble was.

When the album tracklist for Plasma was revealed, we all saw that there were no album mixes of any of the songs at all. But “Time Warp” was tagged as (v1.1). And I think this version of “Time Warp” that Perfume performed was that version.

I mean...it would make sense for this version of the “Time Warp” to have v1.1. But we have no way of knowing for sure until Plasma drops and we hear it in full. But the mix of “Time Warp” Perfume performed to on The Music Day definitely wasn’t the same as the single version. But it was the same as the mix they performed to back in December of 2020 on CDTV Live! Live!. The differences are extremely small. But if you listen for them, you will hear them. There are additional synths during the verses, in addition to a reverse cymbal / whooshing sound effect placed right before a verse comes in. And the mix of the song generally sounds different. It sounds less muddy, which makes the bass sound fuller, and the snares sound sharper, which makes the whole song just sound a bit cleaner.

What’s strange however, is that Perfume didn’t perform the v1.1 “Time Warp” for their 2021 Polygon Wave gig. So now I’m wondering if v1.1 of “Time Warp” is going to be something else, or if somebody just forgot to slip the new version into the playlist, and nobody realised, because the track lengths and the song structures are exactly the same.

I don’t think the Plasma version will transform “Time Warp” to a place where opinions on it do a 180, as was the case with the Cosmic Explorer version of “Cling Cling”. I feel that if “Time Warp” featured significant changes, like entirely new sections, that it would be called an ‘Album Mix’ or the ‘Plasma Version’. The v1.1 feels like a very producer / mixer / engineer thing to call a song which you’ve made small changes to, so you can differentiate it from the original. But let’s see how it turns out when Plasma releases on July 27th.
