Caroline Polachek drops the summery “Sunset” during Halloween season

Caroline Polachek sat on a brown sofa on the street, whilst holding a guitar.

Caroline Polachek has been on a bit of a roll, and kept rolling ever since the string of singles which lead up to the release of 2019’s Pang; an album which ended up being the soundtrack to my 2020.

Following a slow trickle of single releases which has included a cover of The Corrs’ “Breathless” “Bunny is a Rider”, “Billions” and the strange, but fitting for Caroline feature on the operatic “Last Days: Non Voglio Mai Vedere Il Sole Tramontare”, comes “Sunset”. Right as Summer fucks off and Autumn parks its pumpkin spiced booty down.

When I first heard this song I thought ‘It really needed a drop and some form of pay off at the end’. But then I listened to it again, and the fact that there is no drop is one of the coolest things about the song. It gives it this quality of almost being endless, inviting you to just listen to it over and over, and making it feel like one continuous song, as opposed to something with a definitive beginning, middle and an end. And it has an equally cool video which kinda evokes this same feeling. You could run the video back again, and it’s like Caroline is experiencing Groundhog Day.

Caroline Polachek was due to headline her own tour this year, but postponed it until 2023, due to her wanting to focus on finishing up her album; which I’m sure fans are not pissed about, as they have been demanding a new album ever since “Bunny is a Rider” dropped.

Trying to finish up an album whilst touring is crazy. To be in a constant state of frazzled from touring, to then sit on the tour bus or be holed up in studios on your days off to sing more and record songs!? For some this may be great, but TO ME, on paper it just sounds like too much. So hats off to Caroline for saying ‘Nope, not doing it’ and choosing to focus on finish her album, so she can then focus on a tour. And with Caroline dedicating time to record more songs and finish, this means that there is an increased likelihood that these newer songs will be included in setlists when her tour kicks off next year.
