One thing Perfume are gonna do, is see out the year with a couple of performances in some ugly dresses. And this year we got two performances and three dresses, complete with boots that did not match.
Perfume gave their first uglé dress run for CDTV Live! Live!, with a performance of the new Perfume classic, “Spinning World”. Perform tend to only perform “Spinning World” in outfits are the exact same as the ones in the music video (and the Plasma album cover), or look very similar to it. But there will ALWAYS be a skirt. Perfume’s team are particular about that. But this time they switched things up and gave us a whole new outfit, which was reminiscent of the hideous Future Pop shower curtain dresses. But there was still a skirt though, because Spinning gworl. Spinning worl’. The white dresses didn’t look great Perfume span. And I don’t think there was enough consideration made when it came to the sleeves, as Nocchi ended up catching them in the face as she danced, as did Kashiyuka. And the skirts seemed a centimetre or two longer than usual, because I couldn’t help but notice they were brushing the floor more than usual. But maybe it’s a combination the dresses being white, the flooring and the lighting making me notice it more.
When Perfume took to Kōhaku Uta Gassen, we got two outfits for the price of one, due to a quick change, which happened off stage. Somplete with the weirdest live editing and the laziest song transition I think I have ever heard.
Perfume couldn’t have given us a cute on stage quick change? Nakata couldn’t have whipped together a cute transition from “Spinning World” into “Chocolate Disco”? Perfume STILL ain’t matching the boots to the outfits!?
This was too raggedy for Perfume.
When I first saw the Insta photos of Perfume’s white discoball dresses, I assumed they performed “Mawaru Kagami” - given they’re very similar to the outfits they wore when they performed it for Perfume Live: Polygon Wave, with the design of the outfits clearly inspired by and in reference to the song. But, nope. We got “Chocolate Disco”.
“Chocolate Disco” is a-chan’s song. It activates her. It’s the one time she can switch the mic on. So it was a real shame for a-chan to be doing so much, just to be sabotaged by one of the lights during the “Chocolate Disco” pose.
a-chan is going to see to it that somebody is fired for this. I might DM this shot to Nocchi. I know she’d love this.
“Chocolate Disco” is still a jam. But I am sick of Perfume performing the same version of the song. Nakata needs to v1.1 this shit or give it a remix. Or have Perfume re-record it so we at least get newer vocals. No matter how good “Chocolate Disco”, and I do really like it, it gets old when Perfume perform the same version of it each time.
In all fairness, these dresses were not the most hideous. But something I have been noticing a lot recently with Perfume’s outfits, is that how good they look is very situational. Some outfits look far better in certain lights than others. Whilst some look fine when static, but awful when in motion. Some only look good when shot professionally, versus a quick backstage shot on a camera phone. And some are just so damn nasty, that they look horrid no matter what.
I get that Perfume’s outfits are now a signature part of the Perfume brand. And over the past couple of years, we have seen some new silhouettes and ideas every now and then. But their outfits are still pretty ugly on the whole, and I don’t get why some of them are SO bad and look so damn cheap. And why the shoes never match. Y’all remember when Perfume’s pump colour always matched the outfits? Now it’s just black or white boots no matter the outfit. Like somebody can’t lay some newspaper down in the corner of a car park and spray paint the damn boots to match the outfits.
