Crystal Kay is back on stage for Pippin, and that’s great. But, gurl. What about the music?

When news broke that Crystal Kay would be reprising her role as The Leading Player for Pippin’s second run in Japan, I rolled my eyes. ‘Great. Another thing to hold up the music.’ But I was genuinely happy for Crystal that she had a gig and a bag. Especially in light of how much she seemed to enjoy being a part of Pippin the first-time around, and then Crystal Kay’s stint in Hairspray falling to shit in 2020 because of COVID desu.

Pippin will only run until mid September. And I bet we get no new music or anything until 2023. Or if we do get a song this year, it will be in a style which doesn’t acknowledge that Crystal was on Broadway, isn’t festive for the season, and is a complete 180° from “Gimme Some”. I’m glad we got that song. But I do wonder why we got it, if it wasn’t going to be promoted. That shit came and went like my wages.

I still find it crazy that Crystal released a cover album following a stint as The Leading Player on Broadway, and there was no cover of “There’s Magic to Do” or “Simple Joys”. Particularly the latter. Because the way the song is usually sung, and the way in which it’s arranged - it’s right up Crystal’s alley. I bet she sounds great on it, and could put cool spins on it if she recorded it for a release of her own. And the promo? Why is Crystal not currently the face of something, with a song tie-in? Where are the TV spot placements of Crystal talking about being a part of a musical? Where are the televised performances of a Pippin song in character? Where are the interviews talking about the process of putting on a Broadway show in Japan during an on-going pandemic?

Crystal’s team are drawing a very clear line between her music career and her acting / Broadway career, which makes NO sense to me. Crystal is in a damn musical. A huge driving factor to her getting the role of The Leading Player is that she (is a Black woman who speaks Japanese and) can sing. You’d think that Crystal’s team would view her being in Pippin as an easy way to sell tickets to her fans, who barely get to see a bitch on stage, because she doesn’t perform on TV anymore and no longer tours. (I am not counting Christmas pub crawls as a tour. I’m happy for her she got to do them. But they were not tours). And you would think that Crystal’s team would see the value in having Crystal release a cover of one of the songs in Pippin, to raise awareness of its second run, that Crystal is a part of it, and to remind everybody in Japan that Crystal is still here and still singing hoes under JR Line trains. But, nope.

Girl. Fire the whole management and marketing team.

If Crystal’s team were on their shit, we would a Christmas album this year. I would like a new studio album. But if we’re being realistic and trying to capitalise on shit, and going for low hanging fruit; I think Crystal recording a Christmas album would be the way to go. Get a song for a product tie-in for September, then book a bitch with a J-drama tie-in on some shit that airs in October, and then drop the Holiday album in November. As terrible an album as Shine was, “Nando Demo” being tied to a J-drama (starring the J-icon that is Ryoko Shinohara) and the holiday angle worked in its favour and helped it sell. So just do that shit again to get some numbers up. And give the album an angle. Have it be a Christmas cover album of non Christmas songs flipped into Christmas songs. Basically a whole album of what she did with Official Hige Dandism’s “I Love”. And have Crystal do the same with her own songs too. Flip a classic like “Koi ni Ochitara”, to remind people of her Sony catalog - because her team is also doing nothing about that either.

None of this is rocket science, but we know how Crystal’s team be busy doing nothing.
