Faky sell some sex with their single “Choco Fudge”

Faky sat on the floor in a circle at a slumber party, whilst Akina (in the centre) holds a jar of chocolate fudge.

Every time Faky release something that makes me say ‘Oh, I think I see the vision’, they follow it up with something that makes me no longer see it. Their sound is all over the place. Their image is all over the place. And I don’t get why or how. “Better Without You”, “Someday We’ll Know”, “Little More” and “Sayonara My Ex” were Faky songs and videos which I feel best showcased Faky as a put together package. They had a sound that clicked and a look that worked with each of these songs, and they all fit together in some way. But in-between these releases we’ve gotten some mish-mashed nonsense and no sense of direction for this group whatsoever. And even with a long-awaited debut album finally on the horizon, Avex still are making no effort to rectify this. And just two singles in post album announcement, we get another pivot for the group, because Faky be selling some sex now.

Trying to push Faky as this titillating sex kitten girl group, with suggestive promo when it’s never been a thing with any of their songs or videos before - it’s weird to me. But maybe it’s just me.

I’m not feeling any of it. Not because of the sex angle. I’m no prude. It’s just that none of this feels like it fits Faky, because it doesn’t align with anything we’ve gotten from them over the past 9 years. Faky have worn sexy outfits and shaken a lil’ ass before. But this whole Pink Ladies pyjama party sleep over and suggestively eating chocolate? Nope. And Avex making this choice shows (yet again) that they don’t know how to package Faky. They keep pivoting every other release. Avex’s inability to settle on a look, a vibe and a sound with Faky is going to fuck them up in the long run.

HENNYWAY.

Around 3 months ago, Faky announced that they will finally drop an album. We’ve gotten nothing but a release date, and what might be the album cover - but still no word on the tracklist. And honestly, the tracklist could go in one of two directions. Either every single song from “Girls Gotta Live” is going to be on this album with nothing new on it. Or it will feature 8 of the singles, along with “Diamond Glitter”, “Choco Fudge”, the inevitable final single (which will probably release in September) and then 3 new songs. Either way, it’s a type of ridiculousness that Faky are only releasing their debut album 9 years after they debuted. And this album really shoulda just been a best album given how many singles Faky have put out since group line-up 3.0. They should all be packaged on a release at some point, and soon.

Faky’s debut album releases on October 19.
